About the event

Featured Artists: Marcy Bernstein, Debra Stelnik

Roost Arts Hudson Valley is proud to present Earth, Fire Wind, and Water a two-person exhibition pairing the abstract and the representational in a shared meditation on the elemental forces that shape our world.

Marcy Bernstein's mixed-media works — built up in encaustic, collage, and layered paint on reclaimed surfaces — capture earth and water in their rawest, most textural states. Her canvases are excavated as much as painted: torn paper, weathered wood, and pooled color collide to suggest tide pools, mineral deposits, and the slow erosion of time itself. Circles of red and gold surface like embers beneath ice-blue currents, embodying transformation and impermanence — the show's beating heart.

Debra Stelnik brings a representational counterpoint, her oil paintings capturing water and sky in their most cinematic moods. From the fiery hush of sailboats anchored beneath a molten sunset to the dramatic churn of a lone vessel cutting through storm-lit waves, Stelnik's work grounds the exhibition in atmosphere and narrative — moments where nature's power is witnessed rather than abstracted.

Together, these two distinct visual languages — one dissolving form, one defining it — invite viewers to consider the same elemental truths from opposite directions: the wildness beneath the surface, and the wildness we can see with our own eyes.
