Evan Schouten

First Place

I like to think of my portfolio as an archive of the mundane, all of it ephemera to boost my worsening memory. A piece is usually of a thing so rare (or common) that it may be individually overlooked, as I seldom remember much, aside from niche occurrences.

My usual subject ranges from my Tradescantia plant Wilson, whom I’ve been cloning (via propagation) and giving away for years, to an array of poorly-cloaked various video game references.

Likewise, a great inspiration to me (as an artist and writer) has been the novel Elric of Melnibone`. I highly recommend it, but that is neither here nor there.

Any traces of it, will, however, not be found in my portfolio, because this book has been so formative to me that I am loath to tarnish it. Instead, I plan on honing my skills until I can breathe life into a worthy vessel for this unfathomably dear mythos.

An occasional still life-type composition of a root vegetable, too, may pique my interest, especially if it is a staple of my culture. I find that it is thought-provoking– from the scientific reliance of a people on crops that thrive in their climates, to the deeper experience of my personal experience as a child of immigrants.
