Doug Hansen
Most of my artistic career has involved illustration, from self-published comix, to newspaper illustration, to my own children’s books.
I appreciate history and I like doing research related to the subjects of my art.
I enjoy observing the appearance of the world around me. As I render an image I grow to understand and appreciate that thing all the more.
I like creating patterns and often include decorative elements in my creations.
Edges, outlines and borders can be important elements. I may employ flat, graphic color or work in black and white.
Line-work, especially pen and ink, is a favorite of mine.
I am a painter that depends on his drawing ability.
Watercolor or gouache are my usual wet media, often combined with line work.
In my landscape paintings and drawings I look for the beauty in commonplace things.
My art is approachable and life-affirming. Humor and playfulness can also be part of what I create.
My work is modest in size - I’m most comfortable working on my desktop in my studio.
I spent a lifetime living and working in California, but now that I’ve retired I’m growing to love my new home in the Hudson Valley.
